Amputation Prevention

Amputation Prevention Program:

Coastal Vein and Vascular Specialists has developed a custom and unique program to prevent amputation. This program has been pioneered by CVVS’s founding surgeon, Dr. Christopher Boyes. Dr. Boyes has spent the majority of his career researching and developing methods to mitigate the need for surgical amputation at his prior position as an academic vascular surgeon with Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute at Atrium Health in Charlotte, North Carolina.

At Sanger, he ran a research team and data base that was dedicated to researching amputation prevention. He has authored several papers and is a nationally recognized speaker on the subject of amputation prevention. Dr. Boyes specializes in treating the most complex of all Peripheral Artery Disease cases. Many of his patients have been told by other physicians that they need an amputation. Dr. Boyes sees these no-hope patients as a second opinion and many times is able to save them from an amputation through this unique amputation prevention program.

Amputation Prevention Program
Essentially, the amputation prevention program involves customizing an entire treatment pathway for each individual patient that presents with a wound or ulcer on the foot or leg. CVVS dedicated staff and coordinators are involved in every step of the process. The Amputation Prevention Program at CVVS uses a unique multi-disciplinary team of physicians that are all dedicated to saving your leg from an amputation. This team involves a CVVS Vascular Surgeon, as well as Podiatrists, Wound Care Physicians, Endocrinologists, Infectious Disease Physicians, Nutritionists, Orthotists, and in some cases Home Health Nursing Agencies. The goal is for the team to function as a single unit in order to improve time to communication, which will improve time to treatment, and ultimately improve time to healing.
